Aimlessness and Death

In Salman Rushdie’s Quichotte, the hero’s cousin fires him after many years, and then he worries about what he’s done. ‘He feared the worst, now that he had let Quichotte go. The old fellow would deteriorate into some sort of bum, wandering aimlessly from nowhere to nowhere, dreaming his impossible dream of love.’

And eventually, he assumes, he will have to pick up Quichotte’s body at some nameless motel.

Aimlessness unto death: this is how aimlessness got its bad name, the fear that without a clear set of goals and procedures we won’t be able to support ourselves, won’t have what it takes to even keep ourselves alive.
